Toasts can be very, very tricky to photograph. I love framing the speaker with the bride and groom in the shot. I love to focus on the emotion and reactions. They’re one of my favorite parts of the wedding because they’re guaranteed to make me tear up.
In the photograph below, I have a whole series (that I’ll positively be sharing when I’m through editing the whole wedding) where Andrea and Justin are laughing with her father as he tells stories about her growing up. I loved the lighting set-up that I had, but I decided to try something new.
I wanted to capture everything about Dad – his features, his emotion. The way he held the microphone. I wanted to single him out for a few photographs. I turned off my on-camera flash that I was using for fill light and let my off-camera flashes do all the work.
This photograph is a little different from the norm. I keep coming back to Dad’s toast as I’m editing these photos because they is something about it that just captivates me.
Lighting, my friends, is magical.
