Disclaimer:: some brides love and adore their dresses and want to pass them down to their future daughters. Not Ashley. Ashley was up for sacrificing her dress for the sake of art. For beautiful photos of she and Chris that would document their marriage in a fun, romantic way.
When Ashley told me she wanted to incorporate water, I knew that we could do something awesome. At the time, I wasn’t sure how far she would want to go with her dress. Or how cautious she would be. I recommended that we rent a canoe on Town Lake and we do whatever we could think of with it. I should probably also mention it was the very middle of winter when we did this session. Ashley was freezing and we were taking a huge risk that I wouldn’t ask them to do something too ridiculous and they’d be steady enough not to rock the boat (no pun intended) and fall into the frigid water. Despite all the “what-ifs”, Ashley and Chris were up for it… for the sake of “What if we get that perfect shot ?”
This session was an absolute blast to photograph. I was pushed creatively to think of ideas, to have to figure out how to photograph a canoe that moved with the current, and to communicate with them when sometimes they were quite far away. These photographs mean a lot to me, and I hope these two look back at them and are glad they took the chance. That, for the sake of art, it was worth it.
