During the dating period of life, there’s this whole get-to-know-you time when you first meet someone. It can be awkward, but it can also be a ton of fun. You find out if you connect. Where you’re different. Maybe some things are really odd and become a deal breaker. Then again, maybe you might have met the person of your dreams.
Hiring a photographer for your wedding is much like dating someone. Maybe your styles just don’t mesh. Maybe a photographer’s images make you want to cry every time you see them… and you have to have them at your wedding. Your personalities have to mesh and it shouldn’t feel like you’re working too hard. Again, it’s very similar to finding your spouse. This is one reason I highly recommend that you meet photographers in person before signing a contract.
I’ve been thinking a LOT about how to get to know my brides and grooms better. I don’t just want to be their photographer, I want to be their friend. I want to be able to bring up great memories while we’re taking pictures and make them smile to break the tension. I want to go out to lunch with them long after the wedding is all said and done.
With that being said, welcome to the first installment of “FAQ with an Upcoming Bride and Groom”. I sent Greg and Amanda a fun little survey to fill out for me. They were the inspiration behind this whole idea. When I received their timeline for the wedding day and a list of pictures they wanted… I was CRACKING UP. The very first day I met them, I left with a belly ache because we laughed so much. Then their emails made me hysterical. I love these guys and I can’t wait for you to get to know them too. Here are their answers…the only requirement was that they had to have fun…
Names: Greg and Amanda
Wedding Date: February 20, 2010
Tell us how you two met…
We’re both very technology-dependent (Amanda for work, and Greg for avoiding work) so it’s no surprise that we met thanks to the magic of the internet. We recommend eharmony.com to anyone looking for their special someone! We’re constantly amazed that we’re such a great match for each other.
When did you get engaged? What’s your engagement story?
Greg: We were in Puerto Rico in the middle of a month long vacation thanks to a Jet Blue all-you-can-fly for a month promotion. We were in our hotel room one night playing a card game called Quiddler where you have to make words out of the cards you’re dealt. In the last round I laid down my words which spelled out “Will you marry me”
Amanda: The bad part is Greg was losing really bad, so I was trash talking about how bad I was winning, right up until the moment he proposed.
What are you looking forward to MOST about your wedding?
I think having all our friends and family in one place and having fun together is going to be a blast. Weddings are a great excuse to have a big fun party! Oh, and of course the start of our wonderful lives together :)
What is your ideal date night? A night out? Dinner with friends?
Our ideal date night would be dressing up, going downtown, and enjoying a wonderful (mildly expensive) dinner… it would be even better if we had a coupon for the restaurant!
What are your favorite qualities/attributes of your soon-to-be-spouse?
Greg: Amanda is incredibly smart, and I love that she keeps me on my toes. I’ve never met anyone so supportive and honest, and I love that she’s really good at so many weird things. She’s someone who will try anything once with me, as long as it doesn’t involve food that is.
Amanda: Greg is intelligent, caring, funny, sweet, romantic, handsome, thoughtful… he’s absolutely perfect for me. I’ve never been so happy!
If you won the lottery, what would you do with your millions of dollars?
First we’d buy our dream house in central Austin, then a few investment houses. We’d probably throw a party for our friends, donate money to the animal shelter, and then put the rest in the bank!
What advice can you provide for other couples in the process of planning their wedding?
Make the wedding your own, and do what YOU want to do since it’s your special day. Try to save money, since if you think the wedding is going to be expensive just wait until you start planning the honeymoon. Above all, don’t forget to relax and have fun!
Thank you, Greg and Amanda for being the first FAQ Bride and Groom! You guys are awesome and I’m looking forward to your wedding. And because a post is even better with a picture, here are Greg and Amanda outside the location of their wedding. Have a great weekend!
